The rule at the checkpoint

The Transportation Security Administration limits the liquids you carry through screening. Its page on the rule sets the size.

These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.
Transportation Security Administration, Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels Rule. Read 1 October 2026.

The limit is about what is in the container at the checkpoint. A bidet bottle with water in it breaks the rule. The same bottle empty is a piece of plastic.

Both sizes are several times over the limit, so neither goes through full. In checked luggage the limit does not apply, and we would still pack the bottle empty: luggage gets squeezed, and a full bottle can leak.

Packing it

  • Unscrew the nozzle and shake both parts dry.
  • Slip the nozzle inside a clean sock or a small pouch so the spray head stays clean.
  • Put the bottle where a bag check will find it fast. An officer may want a look.
  • Carry a few sheets of tissue in the same pocket for drying.

The XL is the larger of the two. It suits a suitcase more than a handbag.

Using it on the way

Airport restrooms have warm taps, so fill the bottle at the basin after security. On the plane the lavatory tap is slow and the water is cold. It works, and most people prefer to wait.

At the hotel, fill it each time and empty it after. A bottle left full on a shelf for three days is a bottle that needs a wash.

Where the tap water is not safe to drink

For a rinse on unbroken skin, tap water that locals wash with is what a fixed bidet there would use too. If you have a wound, or you are a few days past giving birth, fill the bottle with bottled water.

What can go wrong

  • An officer can refuse any item. The rule gives them the last word.
  • A bottle packed wet smells after a long flight. Dry it first.
  • Other countries set their own limits. Check the airport you fly back from.
  • The cap is tight by design. Loosen it before you sit down, not after.
